VDOT’s Fredericksburg District has exciting an opportunity available in its Environmental Department. We are seeking experienced, qualified candidates to fill a Senior Cultural Resources Specialist vacancy. This person will plan and coordinate architectural history and/or historic engineering components of our regional statewide cultural resource program. They will assess eligibility of above ground cultural resources for the National Register of Historic Places; determine effects of transportation projects on historic properties; develop scopes of work on projects, negotiate and coordinate with consultants, and determine acceptance of completed studies in accordance with professional standards; apply project-level techniques, principles, and practices used in the collection and analysis of cultural resources data; and apply cultural resource management principles and techniques in the coordination of transportation projects. Additionally, the individual in this role will coordinate with various state, federal, and other stakeholders. The selected applicant will also organize and provide the cultural resource component for district and residency environmental training.

Required skills for job & position:
• Knowledge of the Commonwealth's cultural resources
• Knowledge of and ability to interpret a wide range of federal and state transportation, environmental, and cultural resource statutes, regulations, policies, and procedures
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with internal and external customers
• Ability to resolve environmental engineering problems as they relate to cultural resource issues relative to transportation
• Ability to apply technical and scientific principles to the management of cultural resources in an applied transportation context
• Skill in the use of computers and software applications


 


Minimum Qualifications


• Degree in architectural history, history, archaeology or related field
• Knowledge of federal and state transportation, environmental, and cultural resource statutes, regulations, policies, and procedures
• Ability to apply technical and scientific principles to the management of cultural resources in transportation projects
• Ability to resolve complex environmental engineering problems and offer logical solutions
• Skill in the use of computers and software applications
• Valid driver's license


 


Additional Considerations


• Demonstrated experience managing, designing, and implementing small- and large-scale architectural surveys/studies and report production, including the development of National Register eligibility determinations and historic context statements
• Experience coordinating the Section 106 process with state/federal agencies, engaging with consulting parties and Native American tribes, and drafting agreement documents
• Project management experience with a transportation focus in applying technical environmental principles and practices related to cultural resource management
• Experience and skills to resolve complex environmental engineering problems by offering logical solutions
• Proficiency in the use of GIS software in cultural resource management contexts

This position is classified as designated to emergency operations and may be required to work outside of normal work hours, on weekends and holidays during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations to ensure the safety of the traveling public.
