Job Duties


The Virginia Department of Transportation’s Central Office Traffic Operations Division is recruiting for the position of Traffic Engineer. The selected candidate will provide technical advice, guidance and training regarding assigned engineering program areas. Prepare analyses, reports, and recommendations based on engineering determinations. Provide engineering support and consultation related to engineering program area. Effectively manage assigned projects to ensure timely and accurate completion. Communicate with internal VDOT staff, local government staff, consultants, citizens and FHWA regarding transportation projects and programs. Conduct complex traffic engineering studies including, but not limited to traffic signal studies and modifications, speed studies, roadway and pedestrian safety and capacity analyses and special studies. May oversee consultant staff performing traffic engineering studies. This role is responsible for implementing the Virginia Highway Safety Improvement program through effective management of consultant contracts and the administration of annual funding, studies and projects related to highway and rail safety improvements program.


Minimum Qualifications


• Experience designing plans for traffic control devices, incorporating traffic engineering
requirements into roadway plans and making recommendations for plan changes.
• Experience in conducting traffic engineering studies involving traffic operations, traffic
control devices, and roadway and pedestrian safety and capacity issues.
• Experience collecting and analyzing traffic related data.
• Considerable experience gathering data, developing recommendations and making
presentations.
• Extensive knowledge of traffic engineering principles, practices and standards.
• Skilled in the use of computers and software applications to include traffic engineering and design software such as CADD, MicroStation, Highway Capacity Software, Synchro,
CORSIM, SYDRA, etc.


Additional Considerations


• A combination of training, experience, or education in Civil Engineering or related field desired.
• Experience on data analysis skills to assess, interpret, and report on large highway safety related datasets.
• Knowledge on safety data analysis and reporting tools such as AASHTO Highway Safety Manual and FHWA CMF Clearinghouse, SharePoint, Excel, R or Python.
• Knowledge and experience with ESRI ArcGIS geospatial skills to map and analyze data or to use other GIS platforms that is transferable.
• Experience and ability to present safety program and technical information and develop and/or provide related training materials.
• Ability to conduct on-site field safety reviews and assessments.
• Understanding of VDOT project planning and design process and procedures.
• Possible Future growth, an Engineer in Training (EIT) certification is preferrable but not required.
