This hourly/wage position is not entitled to the State's benefits package or Virginia Personnel Act (VPA) protections. Incumbents hired into hourly/wage positions are limited to working an average of 29 hours per week and 1,500 hours in a 12-month period.
Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Hampton Roads District has an exciting opportunity for a Safety Instructor Wage to support the District safety training needs and provide instruction for all employees, especially those in safety sensitive positions. Coordinate, schedule, and teach safety-related training for all employees and identified technical training for maintenance operators in support of the District safety program.
Core responsibilities for job & position:
Provide and monitor safety and identified technical training for new maintenance employees prior to and once assigned to their crews. Conduct remediation training with employees and crews for reoccurring areas of concern. Will be responsible for delivering Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) both classroom and Behind the Wheel (BTW) training. Will support new employees in preparation for DMV test and obtaining their CDL. Will be delivering Basic Equipment Operations Class (BEOC) training.
Assist District Safety Manager in delivering training and new safety learning initiatives as driven by District needs. Provide all required original and refresher training within specified timelines to ensure compliance with OSHA, and agency requirements.
Conduct First Aid, CPR and Bloodborne Pathogen training.
Maintain safety training schedules and records for all employees. Maintain agency records of employee's credentials. Conduct periodic compliance audits of safety records to identify employees in need of training.

• Knowledge and skill in CDL equipment and operations.
• Knowledge of applicable federal, state and local regulations regarding workplace safety.
• Ability to collect and analyze data and maintain records.
• Ability to use computers and software applications.
• Knowledge and skill in operating safety equipment.
• Ability to implement a needs-based technical training program.
Minimum Qualifications
• Experience teaching adults in both classroom and field settings.
• Valid driver's license.
• Possession of Class A CDL and DOT medical card for a minimum of 2 years in good standing. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment
• Knowledge of applicable federal, state and local regulations regarding workplace safety.
• Ability to travel to conduct training events and attend meetings.
• Knowledge and skill in CDL equipment operations and requirements.
• Must have or be able to obtain and maintain certification as Red Cross First Aid and CPR instructor within 6 months of hire.
• Possess or ability to obtain and maintain certification in VDOT Safety, Safety for Managers, OSHA 10, OSHA 30, Fall Protection, and Excavation.
Additional Considerations
• Progressively responsible experience in training within a transportation related organization.
• Familiarity with state and VDOT training-related guidelines.
• Prior experience conducting safety and equipment related training.
• A combination of training, experience or education in education, training, employee safety, equipment operations or related area desired.
• Experience maintaining records within automated systems.

Position is designated as essential and, as such, will be required to work outside normal hours, weekends, and holidays during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations. Travel may be required.
VDOT utilizes a market-based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
